Second Nature: A Gardener's Education
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-12-16 Summary: Should be on everyone's to read list. ... As has been the case with all of Michael Pollan's books that I have read, he informs with humor and narrative that at times makes me laugh out loud. My all time favorite, however, is Omnivore's Dilemma. I have changed the way I shop in our local market since reading it. This also is a MUST read. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-03-08 Summary: Delightful reading ... Michael Pollan's writing is full of metaphors. This book about nature as a human construct was enjoyable to read. I found some parts frustrating because I like the romantic idea of nature even if it is just a human construct. But overall I would recommend this book for a quick read. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-02-08 Summary: philosopher of gardening ... I loved this book. It is written in the spirit of earth that author obviously is in love with. The book is divided into four seasons: spring summer, fall and winter. Each of the seasons has it's own unique characteristic that follows ancient tradition of preparing soil, sowing, cultivating, weeding, harvesting and winter nothingness. However if reader looks for practical advises, he or she will not find it here. It is a wonderfull read for all the nature lovers. ...more

[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-08-09 Summary: Digital Nature Photography Book ... Honestly, this is the best photography text book I've read in a long time. It was the recommended book in a nature class this past summer. I agree with the instructor, its explanation of exposure is the best out there. I've recommended it to many people. Nature's Beloved Son: Rediscovering John Muir's Botanical Legacy
Customer Reviews
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | As a young boy growing up in Wisconsin, John Muir faithfully recorded in his journal that the pasque-flower was a hopeful multitude of large, hairy, silky buds about as thick as one s thumb and that lady s slipper orchid in nearby meadows caught the eye of all the European settlers and made them gaze and wonder like children. Muir was blessed early on with a love and aptitude for botany, a field of study that helped him become one of the most influential environmentalists in the world....more
Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-26 Summary: Microwave generation ... I teach high school, and I can tell you we have raised what we call a microwave generation: they want to push a button and it happens. They call their cell phone their "baby." When I attempted to tell them about a recent trip to Africa where I did volunteer work for animal anti-poaching in the wild, they were aghast I had no access to cell phones, myspace, or a computer. Few were interested in the slide show of my trip, prefering instead to gossip about teen angst and the latest rumours. However, we are responsible ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-26 Summary: A MUST READ! ... Parent or child, young or old, EVERYONE can benefit from this book (for parents, it should be a must read, though). We are a culture that has gone astray from nature, and are hurting as a result. The statistics are astonishing at first, but they are really not that hard to translate into our current state of emotional, physcological, and physical health. Effective at shining light on today's ills (ADD, Autism, Depression, Obesity, etc...), this book also expertly weaves in the solutions, showcasing encouraging examples ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-12-07 Summary: Required reading for parents ... Every parent who grew up in the outdoors should read this and remember what it meant to be a child. Generations are loosing their connection to the land and the land is what made America great. Read it and get back out there with your children, or simply get back out there yourself. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Richard Louv was the first to identify a phenomenon we all knew existed but couldn't quite articulate: nature-deficit disorder. His book Last Child in the Woods created a national conversation about the disconnection between children and nature, and his message has galvanized an international movement. Now, three years after its initial publication, we have reached a tipping point, with Leave No Child Inside initiatives adopted in at least 30 regions within 21 states, and in Canada, Holland,...more

I have always been fascinated by tropical forests, and this book did a great job of presenting lots of factual information about them and at the same time giving a really good feeling for the aesthetic pleasure of being in one. [2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-11-29 Summary: for everyone ... Still in print and selling well 23 years after its first publication, this is a classic book about the beauty and importance of rain forests and their many inhabitants, both plant and animal. I read this book for an undergraduate class that included a trip to Costa Rica. It's an interesting blend of history, organismal biology, and plea for conservation. It also contains practical information about how to hike around in a rain forest. Overall, a very pleasant read told in a conversational manner. Author of Adjust Your ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-04-10 Summary: Great way to learn more than you wanted to know about tropical nature! ... It's much more readable than a textbook but still provides a lot of detail. It's probably an excellent way to actually gain some understanding of tropical nature, and the many types of inter-relationships. I'm a biologist by training, but knowing nothing about tropical nature I wanted to learn about it before going on a tour in Panama & Costa Rica. It's easy to read a chapter at a time. Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-11-22 Summary: Teaches Children to Appreciate Mother Earth ... This book is awesome. I checked it out from the library on a whim and ended up loving it so much that I plan to buy it for my daughter. The beginning of the book provides basic information about the artistic gifts the earth provides for us to use, and then each chapter addresses different materials and creative projects that children can make from them. I've read some bad reviews of this book, and frankly I believe that a person who would feel that way clearly doesn't see the point in instilling in their child a relationship ...more
